My Top 10 Albums: #9 – Cheap Trick – Dream Police

This post is part of a ten-part series showcasing my top 10 albums. Certain obvious legends (Beatles, Queen, Rolling Stones, etc.) are not in the list, these are albums not everyone knows or picks.

This is a recent edition. I admit, I missed the boat several times on Cheap Trick, but they were there all along, many of the singles and FM radio tracks I remember distinctly, and they take me back to the late 70s when I was discovering my musical self. Their contributions to the film Heavy Metal in 1982 were (and still are) two of my favorites.

It’s interesting how this album got in my top 10. I’ve been listening through Cheap Trick’s catalog in order from the first song “Hot Love” from 1977, to the last release, “Gimme Some Truth” (2021). My best friend curated the list, in order, with Christmas tracks, and special performances like “Day Tripper” from Found All The Parts tossed into the essential history of the band.

Track Listing:

  1. Dream Police” – 3:49
  2. Way of the World” (Robin Zander, Nielsen) – 3:39
  3. “The House Is Rockin’ (With Domestic Problems)” (Tom Petersson, Nielsen) – 5:12
  4. Gonna Raise Hell” – 9:20
  5. “I’ll Be with You Tonight” (Nielsen, Zander, Bun E. Carlos, Petersson) – 3:52
  6. Voices” – 4:22
  7. “Writing on the Wall” – 3:26
  8. “I Know What I Want” – 4:29
  9. Need Your Love” (Nielsen, Petersson) – 7:39

That’s the standard album, the version I was provided includes

  • Day Tripper (Live Extended Version) – 4:19
  • [Such a] Good Girl (EP Version) – 3:07
  • Take Me I’m Yours (EP Version) – 4:37
  • This House Is Rockin’ (With Domestic Problems) [Live] – 6:16
