This post is part of a ten-part series showcasing my top 10 albums. Certain obvious legends (Beatles, Queen, Rolling Stones, etc.) are not in the list, these are albums not everyone knows or picks.
I’ve always loved this album. The acoustic opening, the slow build of “Dogs” (the working title for this song was “Raving and Drooling”), Pigs, Sheep – they’re all represented and this is the last album before The Wall completely overshadowed everything and pretty much destroyed the band.

That may be controversial of me to say, but The Wall was purely Roger Water’s vision, and the others were along for the ride. David Gilmour contributed the major hits, then came the movie and the follow-up album The Final Cut, and that one seemed like a half-assed effort and the end of Pink Floyd, at least for me. The subsequent material is more David Gilmour solo than Pink Floyd. Without Roger Waters, there is no Pink Floyd.
Animals falls in that sweet spot between the start and onslaught of full insanity. Most of the songs are slow and deliberate and the lyrics bite just hard enough. Beautiful work.
